Robert Aitken (flutist and composer)
Tone development through interpretation

Robert Aitken, born in Canada, studied flute with Nicholas Fiore at the Royal Concervatory of Music in Toronto. Following shorter periods of study with Frederick Wilkins and Julius Baker, he met the eminent french flutist and pedagogue Marcel Moyse, whom he considers his major teacher. He spent four summers at the Marlboro Festival with Moyse and innumerable other periods af time which Aitken considers as nine intensive years with a continuing relationship until his death. When Moyse returned to Europe in 1964 for the first Boswil classes, Aitken received a Canada Council grant which enabled him to spent further time with Moyse as well as studying for four month periods with Jean-Pierre Rampal, Severino Gazzelloni, André Jaunet and Hubert Barwasher. At the age of 19, Robert Aitken was principal flute of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and at 24, the Toronto Symphony under Seiji Ozawa. Later he directed the Banff Centres Advanced Studies in Music Program and is at present Professor for Flute at the staatliche Hochschule für Musik, Freiburg im Breisgau.

William Bennett
Marcel Moyse as a performer

William Bennett (WIBB) has raised the profile of the flute to that of an instrument of subtle tonal colours, dynamics and expression and may well be considered to be the natural heir to the legacy of his great inspiration, mentor and teacher Marcel Moyse. William Bennett’s burgeoning career developed as an international soloist and major recording artist and received international acclaim and enthusiastic reviews in record and CD journals. Professorships at the Musik Hochschule, Freiburg and the Royal Academy of Music, London and Masterclasses throughout the world have established WIBB as one of the foremost teachers of the age. Continuing and developing the imaginative teaching of Marcel Moyse, WIBB brings his own articulate and cogent reasoning together with his consummate artistry and musical integrity to the Masterclass situation. In 1995 H.M. The Queen presented William Bennett with the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his distinguished service to Music.
